Laura, Life Sentences and Syd

Hi,
Laura Lippman will be lecturing and signing Life Sentences at the Pratt Library 400 Cathedral Street in Baltimore March 10 at 7pm. Hope to see you there. If you want a signed copy email me at
mysterylovescompany at gmail dot com

One of the oldest and dearest friends of Mystery Loves Company died this week, Syd Goldfield. Syd was also loved by Laura Lippman who wrote about him on her blog.http://www.journalscape.com/LauraLippman/2009-03-06-06:43/
****
The beginning of which goes:

It may come as a surprise to the people who read this careless little blog that it takes some planning to file every day, something I do only when I have a new book coming out. I can't remember what I intended to write for today, however. Whatever plan I had, it was out the window when I received some bad news: Syd Goldfield died yesterday. Hardcore regulars here know his wife June from the comments section and I think Syd even slipped in here once or twice. I met Syd soon after I began publishing and he mentioned that he had a admirable goal: He wanted to read 10,000 books in his lifetime. Eventually, I decided to write about his quest... Mrs. Goldfield said to him the other night: "I hope you hit 10,000 and beyond." He's not taking anything for granted, but he knows if he hits 10,000, the next day he'll pick up 10,001. "Maybe it sounds kind of egotistical," he says, "but I'm doing this for myself. I just like to read."
******
June, I hope to see you at Laura's signing at the Pratt Library. You and Syd missed very few of Laura's signings. If I don't see you, I'll send you a note. We really will miss him. I wish they could, like another person mentioned in Laura's blog, clone Syd. Perhaps the book business would be booming. If only there could be more Syds.
Best,
Kathy

Laura sends the following precis about her newest--ANOTHER THING TO FALL.

"P.I. Tess Monaghan collides -- literally -- with Hollywood on the Patapasco when she blunders into a shot early one morning. She has no interest in life behind-the-scenes on a television show, but the executive producer is adamant that he needs her for security. He's right: It's not long before someone is killed at the production office. Unfortunately, as Tess discovers, these Hollywood types lie for fun and profit. "

That's all for now,
Kathy
