THE STRANGE CASE OF THE COMPOSER AND HIS JUDGE. by Patricia Duncker.Bloomsbury, $15.00. (Recommended by Kathy Harig, Mystery Loves CompanyBooksellers, Oxford MD)

This haunting and exceptional book begins with a "departure"-- a horrific scene which hunters come across in the Jura Mountains in France. Nine dead adults and their children whose bodies have been carefully arranged in the snow, died on January 1, 2001. Arriving at the scene soon after Commissaire Andre Schweigen is Dominique Carpentier," Madame Le Juge," an investigator of sects. She has made it her job to investigate this and other extreme religious groups. The case is similar to one in 1984 when Andre and Le Juge worked as partners. Once again they are thrown together and Andre has very strong feelings for Dominique, although he is married.

Dominique is a strong, dispassionate woman and takes the lead in the case.Her job is to put together the evidence and present it to the Republic of France. Her young well-pierced and tattooed assistant Gaelle brings to mind CLSI. The women work as a well-oiled machine to hunt down evidence while Andre frantically calls and emails the women to try to stay connected.

Then investigators discover an ancient book tucked away in the cabin of the"departed." Written in many languages and codes she can't decipher Dominique tracks down the printer of the book in Lubeck,and discovers that it was rebound many years ago for Friedrich Grosz, The Composer, a world famous Lubeck conductor. She believes this charismatic seventy year old man is at the center of the group calling themselves The Faith. She also can't deny that she is growing ever closer to him as he seduces her with his music and his philosophy.

Although primarily a metaphysical mystery, the action ranges from Strasbourg, to the vineyards of Languedoc, to Lubeck, to London, to castle sin Lausanne, and massive telescopes in Cheshire. It talks about death,dying, rebirth and the music of the spheres.

I can only use the words extraordinary to describe this book. I will remember it for a long time. Recommended for readers of music, astronomy and literary fiction and fans of Louise Penny, Fred Vargas and ArturoPerez-Reverte.

RIP Dick Francis

The BBC is reporting that legendary horse racing mystery author Dick Francis has died in the Caymen Islands at age 89. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/arts_and_culture/8515165.stm

Francis is a MWA Grand Master, three time winner of the Edgar Award, and the author of many mysteries and three recent ones with his son Felix. Another mystery co-authored with Felix is due to be published in Fall 2010. His books are favorites of many customers at our store, as well as being a favorite of the Queen of England.

Christmas on the Creek approaches. This weekend Dec 4-6 Oxford puts on its holiday garb and welcomes in the holiday season. Our special day at Mystery Loves Company Booksellers in Oxford is December 5th.

Sunday, Dec 5, 2009 (OXFORD) Christmas on the Creek old-fashioned Christmas celebration includes an author signing at Mystery Loves Company with Bill Shepard author of THE SALADIN AFFAIR, and J.M.E. Flowers, the Columbia MD author of SEARCHING FOR BLUE MERCURY.

Price wars

Dear ones,
As you know, if you are not an ostrich, there is a price war going on for best-selling books.
John Grisham was on the Today Show and his interview with Matt Lauer is an interesting take on The War.

All of us suffer in the long run from these policies of 60% -70% discounts by the box stores and big online retailers (You know who they are). The printed word is cheapened and the royalties to authors and profits of publishers and booksellers will plummet. This is not good news for the book business in this economy.

The three retailers have limited the public to 2 or 3 copies, so bookstores can't even purchase the books from them instead of from publishers where they only receive 40- 45% wholesale.

If you don't think you make a difference, you are wrong.

Mr. Grisham believes that eventually publishers will stop publishing new authors, I believe this "censorship" resulting from this policy would be deadly.

Many purchases online are not charged sales tax. That is a loss to the local economy.

Think before you buy.

Awards - Paul Auster and George Pelecanos

Hi,
I am just back from a one day trip to my old stomping ground, Baltimore, to attend the NAIBA meeting. The New Atlantic Independent Booksellers Association, to those of you who might not know.
Any way they gave two awards to two worthy authors.
Paul Auster received the NAIBA 2009 Legacy Award for Invisible . In a speech Paul praised independents and gave us pause when he noted all the bookstores that had closed.

"The point being: Thank you all for what you are doing. Writers depend on you, readers depend on you, and the intellectual life of our country depends on you. To browse. What a beautiful word. To wander among books, to make discoveries, to be changed forever by an unknown volume pulled by impulse off a shelf. You, the independent booksellers, are the ones who make this possible.

And long time friend and great crime author George Pelecanos was there. It was great to touch base with him. George is working with David Simon on a TV special on Music in New Orleans after Katrina. Can't wait. Later in the evening George's book The Turnaround was chosen for the Hammett Prize:
The North American Branch of the International Association of Crime Writers is pleased to announce that The Turnaround, by George Pelecanos (Little, Brown), has been named the winner of the organization's annual HAMMETT PRIZE for a work of literary excellence in the field of crime writing.

Bearer of sad news

Dear readers,
It is with extreme sadness that I write of the death of Canadian author Lyn Hamilton at age 65 from a long bout with cancer. I will remember Lyn well from conferences at Malice, Bouchercon, and in Toronto. She and Rhys Bowen signed books at our store soon after Lyn's book The Celtic Riddle was made into a Murder She Wrote episode. Lyn's story of watching it for the first time was hysterical. She was critical about parts of the episode, but enjoyed seeing her work on screen. She was a warm delightful and funny person who was knowledgeable about what she wrote (archaeology and travel to exotic places) and wrote it entertainingly in her series featuring Lara McClintoch. I recommend the series highly. She will be greatly missed by us all. You can read more about the series at www.lynhamilton.com

Also we are informed that British author Celia Fremlin has also passed away earlier this summer. Her book the Spider-Orchid is a favorite of mine.

It may come as a surprise to the people who read this careless little blog that it takes some planning to file every day, something I do only when I have a new book coming out. I can't remember what I intended to write for today, however. Whatever plan I had, it was out the window when I received some bad news: Syd Goldfield died yesterday. Hardcore regulars here know his wife June from the comments section and I think Syd even slipped in here once or twice. I met Syd soon after I began publishing and he mentioned that he had a admirable goal: He wanted to read 10,000 books in his lifetime. Eventually, I decided to write about his quest... Mrs. Goldfield said to him the other night: "I hope you hit 10,000 and beyond." He's not taking anything for granted, but he knows if he hits 10,000, the next day he'll pick up 10,001. "Maybe it sounds kind of egotistical," he says, "but I'm doing this for myself. I just like to read."

June, I hope to see you at Laura's signing at the Pratt Library. You and Syd missed very few of Laura's signings. If I don't see you, I'll send you a note. We really will miss him. I wish they could, like another person mentioned in Laura's blog, clone Syd. Perhaps the book business would be booming. If only there could be more Syds.

A special stamp will be issued and there will be events scheduled in the five places which have a claim to EAP, Baltimore, Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Richmond. The Poe Toaster will return once more to Westminster Church in Baltimore with a bottle of cognac and three roses. This scene is at the center of the plot of Laura Lippman's novel In a Strange City.

An end of an era

Dear loyal readers,

As I look out my window today at the Oxford store at 4:15 pm on December 31, 2008 I see a beautiful if extremely breezy Tred Avon riverscape, and a brilliant setting sun. I also realize that at this minute my husband is shutting the door of Mystery Loves Company in Baltimore for the very last time. Author and crime scene specialist John French was in to say goodbye in Baltimore. He reminded us that he was our first customer in August 1991 and was to be one of our last customers today. Louise Titchener came by with a bottle of bubbly and chocolate for tonight's festivities. It is with a very heavy heart and with many fond memories that we leave Baltimore where we have sold books on Fleet Street (as in "Demon Barber of") in Fells Point for 17+ years.

We have held many "launches" of wonderful mystery series (John's, Tim's, Louise's, Jack's, Laura's, Sujata's and George's) to mention a few, unpacked and shelved thousands of books, sold hundreds of copies of our 100 best mysteries and Chesapeake authors, made tea for hundreds of happy fans of visiting authors, and placed hundreds of kibble in bowls for our store cats Nick and Nora. We also think of those who are no longer with us, who worked long and hard hours to help us do all those wonderful things -- Maurice Simmons, Sue Feder, and Paige Rose. I thank Dotty and Sammi and Tom as well. Please remember them fondly. I do.

The time, however had come to leave Baltimore and continue our life on our beautiful Eastern Shore. We hope you will come and see us in 340 year-old Oxford and our fabulous renovated bank building location. The serene surroundings, and great food and lodging will make you linger long after you purchased your books.

Art Guild of Oxford Sale and Show a Hit

Hi,

We have added an art show to our bookstore in Oxford MD at 202 S. Morris Street. Our fabulous Art Guild of Oxford opened its show at our Oxford store the day after Thanksgiving with fifty pieces of art in various media. The opening attracted nearly one hundred visitors. The show and sale continues until Dec 31, 2008.

Yesterday we hosted a reading and reception of the Delmarva Review authors and poets.

The photo taken at our Oxford store at 202 S. Morris Street in Oxford MD includes myself and six writers from the Review's inaugural issue, and two Reviewboard members (John Elsberg, editor of Bogg literary magazine, and MalaBurt, managing editor of the Review).

Author events - We will continue to take a major role in serving the Baltimore Washington and Eastern Shore area with mystery author events and special projects, as well as appearances at malice domestic in may and the Baltimore Book Festival in September. We will continue to feature and showcase our talented local authors with signings in the Oxford store and at other venues such as schools, libraries, festivals, community centers and other venues.
Reading Groups - We will continue to support local reading groups with 20% their book purchases.
Relationships with Special Groups - Our special event relationship will continue with the three local Brandeis University library groups, the Mid-Atlantic chapter of Mystery Writers of America, and the chesapeake chapter of Sisters in Crime. In February 2009 we will be the dealer for the Bay to Ocean writers conference at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills, MD.
Credit and Gift Certificates - Those who have credit or a gift certificate with us, can either use the credit by December 31, 2008 at the Baltimore store, continue the credit and use it at our Oxford store or at www.mysterylovescompany.com, or receive a check for the full amount.
Baltimore Only Sale - November 1, 2008 we will begin a 25% off sale of our stock in the Baltimore store only. Kevin Lowery asked me to remind you that Baltimore author Tom Bonsall's memorial service will be on September 20th at 11a.m. At St. John's Huntingdon, 3009 Greenmount Ave., Baltimore, MD 21218. Tom was a writer of many works of non-fiction and won the Malice Domestic prize for his mystery. Tom also frequently attended Mystery Writers of America meetings and the Malice Domestic convention in May.

Activities in Oxford

I promised in my monthly newsletter that I would have a great picture of Oxford to entice you you come to three upcoming Oxford Events. This was taken from the dock behind our store during last year's Oxford regatta by author Donna Andrews.

Saturday, August 9 is The Oxford Regatta and Artists in the Park. The artists will be selling art to benefit the Oxford Heritage efforts for our 340th anniversary from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. The regatta, of course will be on the Tred Avon behind our Oxford store. We will be assisting the authors by selling Oxford T-shirts to benefit the cause.

Saturday August 16 Mystery Loves Company hosts author Ellen Crosby as she signs her third Virginia wine mystery THE BORDEAUX BETRAYAL from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Ellen will have Virginia wine to share.

Saturday, September 21 is the Oxford Ice Cream Social in Town Park overlooking the Tred Avon.

ANN CLEEVES SIGNING

Although we are busy preparing to be dealers at Bouchercon in October, we couldn't turn down a chance to meet and co-sponsor a signing with Ann Cleeves, British crime author and winner of last year's most prestigious award The Duncan Lawrie Dagger Award for her mystery RAVEN BLACK.

On Tuesday, October 7 at 7:00 pm, at the Pratt Library, 400 Cathedral St. Baltimore MD, Ann signs her newest Shetland mystery WHITE NIGHTS featuring Detective Jimmy Perez. "Raven" was about darkness and winter, and the Viking festival on the islands. "White" is about light and the long summer days that turn into white nights when the sun never sets. In this one Jimmy and his artist friend investigate the strange occurrences at a gallery opening. They go back to the past of the gallery owner and her folk music legend son. If you don't schedule a trip to the Shetlands after reading Ann's books, you are immune to atmosphere in a crime novel.

It is a brilliant winter day here on the banks of the Tred Avon River in Oxford. We have had a run in Oxford, even before St. Patrick's Day, I might add, on Patrick Taylor's two wonderful books AN IRISH COUNTY DOCTOR and AN IRISH COUNTRY VILLAGE. Most think they are crosses between ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL and Jan Karon's books.

We're giving you a heads up on three big books for March:

THE GIRL WHO STOPPED SWIMMING by Joshilyn Jackson is an astonishing book about ghosts in suburban Georgia and other skeletons that families try to hide. The style is extremely personal and mesmerising. On a moonlight night, Laurel, sees a ghost of her daughter's friend at the foot of her bed. She is taken by the ghost to her own backyard swimming pool and the girl's dead body. The very eclectic family rallies round to support one another in their grief. But soon the story takes on a whole new pace, as secrets, elderly family members , and an unreal town called DeLop surface. The writing goes from hysterically funny to chilling in a sentence. I was up all night finishing it. I was privileged recently to hear the author read from her work, which made the book that much more personal. Ms. Jackson is a talent to be reckoned with.

FRIEND OF THE DEVIL by Peter Robinson. Peter is my favorite author. There, I have said it. My favorite book is IN A DRY SEASON. So when another Robinson is due, I get very excited. For some reason the book's American release has been delayed until February 26, 2008. This one has two cases and two detectives Bank and Annie Cabot. I can't wait.

AN INCOMPLETE REVENGE by JacquelineWinspear. Due to a slump in business in London, Maise Dobbs, private eye, is happy to have a case in a small town in Kent. Billy Beale, her employee, and his family are helping out with the hops harvest near the town. The fortunes of the Beale family and her own personal relationships entwine. But soon she suspects a very dark secret about the town. Mysterious fires and a murder occurs and a member of the gypsy community helping with the harvest is accused. As always, Maisie's relationships with her father, her former employer and fellow employees during the Great War figure prominently in the story.

Mysteryland lost three dear souls in January, Margaret Truman, Ed Hoch and Virginia author Benjamin Schutz.
Margaret Truman may or may not have written her Capital Crimes novels. Expert Jon Breen says it was Donald Bain. But she is credited with loving mysteries, as was her mother, the First Lady, Bess Truman. We'll see if Margaret left a "trunk of manuscripts" as Elliott Roosevelt did. Ed Hoch was a giant in the field of the mystery short story with close to one-thousand written. With his white tuft of hair, and beaming face, he was easily spotted at mystery conventions and equally revered by mystery writers and readers. I last saw him at the Edgars Banquet in 2007. I remember sitting next to Stephen Saylor at an earlier Edgars Banquet in 1993 when Stephen won the Robert L. Fish Award for short story writing. I asked him if all novelists could write a short story. Stephen thought that short stories were another genre entirely, and not easily written by every novelist. Edward Hoch surely knew his craft. Enjoy yourself with an Edward Hoch story today.

Finally, we come to Ben Schutz, a member of the local DC metro writers scene for many years, and the Shamus and Edgar winner for his DC mysteries featuring P.I. Leo Haggerty. The reason I was in New York in 1993 at all was that Ben invited Paige Rose and me to sit at his table at the Edgars. That night his short story "Mary, Mary, Shut The Door" won the Edgar. A forensic psychologist, Schutz was very much at home in the criminal mind. His books were riveting and sometimes disturbing. His recent lecture at The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of MWA was thought-provoking and insightful. His was a great talent and it was a even greater pleasure to have known him.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PLEASURABLE READING

It is a really rainy day and you need a book to read. Well I am here to help with two historical mysteries.
First there's ANATOMY OF DECEPTION by Lawrence Goldstone ($24.00) A corpse of a young woman baffles the doctors and interns in a morgue of a Philadelphia hospital. One intern believes that he knows the woman’s identity and that many of the others knew her too, but realizes her death could ruin their reputations. So begins a wonderfully engaging, suspenseful medical mystery set at the beginnings of the modern age of medicine. Its main characters are well-known to students of medicine and art in Philadelphia and Baltimore including famed surgeon Dr.William Osler, co-founder of Johns Hopkins Hospital William Stewart Halsted, and artist Thomas Eakins. Goldstone has created a mystery as compelling as THE ALIENIST. It will be interesting to see the reaction to this book in Baltimore. The book was painstakingly researched and Goldstone made use of Dr. Osler’s works and papers. Highly Recommended.

Coming February 26, 2008 is A FLAW IN THE BLOOD ($24.00) by Stephanie Barron. This one I have been waiting to tell you about since I read a review copy ages ago. A man and a female doctor are hounded by the security forces of Queen Victoria in the suspenseful historical mystery with a real shocker of an ending. Barron (aka Francine Matthews) is the author of the best-selling mysteries featurng Jane Austen as the sleuth. Her research on this one is fascinating and will send you to books or the computer to see how much is "real" and how much is "embellished." Since there are hundreds of books on Victoria and her Consort it is not difficult to track some down, but the details in Barron's book have been, shall we say, "hidden in plain view." The main characters are very well-drawn and engaging, and I'd like to see a sequel, if the characters dare show their faces in England. You've noticed I didn't want to give too much away. Discover the fun for yourself. A delight from start to finish.
